There's a common misconception that all windshield installations are of the same caliber.  Unfortunately, that is not the case.  Just as some mechanics are better than others, with superior skill and ethics, some auto glass companies provide a better result than others.  An inferior quality windshield installation can cost you time and money down the road—and may even put your safety at risk.  But how can you tell whether you're getting a reliable, effective installation or one using shortcuts that shortchange the customer?

The experts at Chambers Auto Glass know this business inside-out.  All of our friendly technicians are Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) trained and certified.  It's part of our commitment to providing excellent auto glass service to our customers throughout Baldwin County, AL.  We recognize that most of our customers probably don't know much about auto glass, but learning a little now can save you money and trouble in the future.  If you're interested in picking up some useful information that will equip you to make smart decisions about auto glass replacement, we invite you to continue reading.  We'll help you learn what to look for and the questions to ask to ensure that you're getting the safest and best windshield installation possible!

What's the Difference Between OEM Glass and Aftermarket or OEM Quality Glass?

It's easy to spend more than necessary on vehicle maintenance and repairs.  If you don't know much about something, you can make costly mistakes.  For instance, many customers find that quotes for auto glass and windshield repair aren't always 100% reliable, simply because the estimate doesn't take into account all the customizations or add-ons required for your vehicle.  If this happens, you may be hit with a higher than expected bill when the work is done.  How can you avoid this predicament?  When requesting an auto glass quote, it's helpful to know whether you need OEM glass or "aftermarket" or OEM quality glass.

Aftermarket / OEM Quality Glass

The alternative to OEM glass is a aftermarket glass, also known as OEM quality glass or OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent) glass.  It's typically accepted to be of equal quality to OEM glass.  The main difference is that it is manufactured by different companies—aftermarket companies—and won't have the same logo as the OEM glass.  Auto glass businesses will always use aftermarket or OEM quality glass for windshield replacement, unless OEM glass is specifically requested.  OEM quality glass is usually covered by insurance policies, making it a more popular choice for windshield replacement.

If the logo on your glass is important to you, or if you have some other reason for preferring the OEM glass, be sure to make this clear when you request quotes.  It's the best way to be certain you're getting the glass you want while avoiding unpleasant surprises on your bill.

The Windshield Replacement Process

1

Step One: Removing the Old Glass

For the best results, we start with a thorough and careful removal of the broken windshield.  Auto glass businesses looking to cut corners will frequently rush through this step, skipping removal of some of the smaller parts and components.  However, that kind of shortcut can lead to an inferior seal on your new windshield.  At Chambers Auto Glass, we do it the right way, taking the time to remove the cowl panel and windshield wipers, as required by the AGSC (Augo Glass Safety Council).

Auto glass technicians begin removing the old glass by cutting through the old glue around the top and sides of the windshield with an L-shaped knife, a process that often leaves small scratches in the paint.  These will be hidden by the windshield, but they still require attention before installing the new windshield.  Ignoring them can result in problems and headaches later on in the form of rust to your auto body!

To loosen the windshield on the bottom edge, we cut from inside the vehicle, using either an electronic removal tool or something called a "cold knife".  This process requires skill and patience.  Getting in a hurry can leave visible damage to your vehicle's dashboard.

With the old glass out of the way, we take the time to trim away any urethane glue that remains around the windshield opening.  Failure to get rid of old glue remnants will prevent your new windshield from sitting flush on the vehicle body.  The new adhesive won't be as easy to distribute equally around the windshield, and that can be a safety concern.

The final part of the removal step is priming the vehicle body.  This step seals any scratches created during the removal process.  It doesn't take long—just a few minutes—but it's an inconvenience that is frequently skipped by less scrupulous technicians who are overbooked or simply not trained in the best practices for windshield replacement.  We at Chambers Auto Glass are committed to taking the time to do things the right way, saving our customers trouble and expense down the road.

2

Step Two: Prepping the New Glass

Chambers Auto Glass takes the time to meticulously inspect every new windshield for defects—before installation.  This may seem obvious, but some businesses take a more relaxed approach toward this step.  We'll do our very best to avoid delays, but ultimately, our customers deserve pristine glass for their satisfaction and safety, and we'll never install flawed glass to save time or money.

We also give the glass a thorough cleaning during this step, ensuring it's ready to accept the urethane adhesive during installation for a good, strong seal.

3

Step Three: Setting the New Glass

We start by running a bead of urethane glue on either the windshield or the body of the vehicle.  This will vary, depending on the vehicle.  We use a quality adhesive that is rated to meet safety standards and deliver lasting results, and we apply the glue with an electric caulking gun for a smooth, even application.

Our technicians work in teams of two to place your windshield into the pinch weld correctly, ensuring the best seal possible.  Some auto glass companies "stuff" windshields.  This is an industry term that means that they have to slide the windshield into the weld, squishing the adhesive in the process.  "Stuffing" is what happens when a technician hasn't taken the time during the removal step to take off the cowl panel and other hardware.  Because we do it the right way—no "stuffing"—the windshields we install won't have annoying, noisy wind leaks.

The final step of installation involves gently tapping the glass into place, replacing any external hardware we've removed, cleaning the new windshield one more time, and giving it a thorough last inspection for any issues that may not have been visible prior to installation.  We'll replace any stickers from your old windshield—and then you're good to go!
